Week 1 Syllabus

Introductions:

-         Name

-         Favorite Instrument

-         Favorite music Artist

-         What you want to be?

Introduce class:

-         We will be learning about how rhythms and beats in music relate to fractions. We learn that throughout our cultures, our ancestors have used rhythms that were deeply rooted in mathematics. Finally, we use use our knowledge of rhythms, our history and fractions to produce our own beats.

Today's Class:

-         Heartbeat exercise:

-         Stand in a circle

-         Feel and sense your heartbeat

-         Express in through trapping your feet

-         Then focus harder on your heartbeat and start clapping your hands to the beat

-         Lesson:

-         Each person has their own unique rhythm. No two peoples rhythms are the same.

-         What is a minute?

-         There are sixty seconds or beats per minute

-         Go around the room, what do you think 60 seconds sounds like?

-         Have the class agree on consistent tempo equal to 60 seconds

-         Have feet continue tapping 60 seconds and have hands clap 2 beats per second or 120 beats per minutes

-         Go back to 60/60

-         Have hands clap beat per second or 30 beats per minute while feet continue to tap 60.

-         March around the room keeping the beats.

-         Lesson:

-         Everything rhythm consists of a fraction. Whether 1 second is 1/60th of a minute or your hands are clapping in a 2:1 ratio to your feet tapping.

-         Pass the beat

-         Have each student add on to the beat, go around the circle each student making a sound, and adding onto it, if someone messes up the next person needs to fix it.
